How to make your Mac read a PDF aloud
1. The free, built-in way
macOS can already speak selected text, and it costs nothing:
- Open System Settings ▸ Accessibility ▸ Spoken Content.
- Turn on Speak selection. The default shortcut is ⌥Esc.
- Open the PDF in Preview, select the text you want, press ⌥Esc.
For a page or two, stop here — this is genuinely enough, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

- It reads the selection. For a 200-page report you are selecting, scrolling and re-selecting all day.
